Arlo Guthrie Recollects About His Old Touring Buses

In Arlo Guthrie's own words:

On The Road - from long ago. Once the snow starts falling, it'll bury everything on the ground for months. So it's a good idea to clean up everything that you don't to run over with snow plows and tractors.

These old relics - these busses from former decades of touring are fairly safe from that. There's so many memories within them - Years and years of family and friends rolling throughout the continental USA. They've seen every nook and cranny of this country from the highest peaks to the lowest swamps and deserts.

We all grew up in these rolling tin cans. And there's others scattered around the farm - other decades, other tours. I saved 'em all because they weren't worth selling after we got thru with 'em. Well, that's not entirely true. I may part with some of the later ones, but not these two.

Someday, after I win the lottery (or something) I hope to restore these, along with the Checker Marathon sitting out in the cold behind the barn. But for now, they're like sculptures - reminders of what we do and where we've been. There's stories yet to tell. But not quite yet.

The bus in the foreground is a favorite - a 1954 GMC Scenic Cruiser. Behind it is a 1972 Silver Eagle.

There is a bus enthusiast in orange County NY who restored a Scenic Cruiser, found in PA. took 12 years and $1.2 million to restore, now he is afraid to drive it.

Well since you will never win the lottery and the chance is much higher that you be hit by lightning more then once I assume they will never be restored. Unfortunate but true in many other cases.

I keep the registry for surviving Greyhound Scenicruisers. I have owned 20 examples and still own 2. I would love to know the serial number of your coach. It would read: PD4501-??? I have around 213 known remaining Scenic on my roster. With the serial number, I can provide all greyhound fleet info. That is which division ran it, when and where. Thanks

I have restored several old tour coaches over the last 43 years and I have a few setting around my farm. I would like to see the others that you have setting around.

I had to sell mine due to a 60 foot fall off a roof. I used to take it to Falcon Ridge folk festival which is pert near where Arlo’s buses are. I asked to buy his but I was told they didn’t want to sell it.
It was taken to the Phila folk festival for 11 years and Shakori rhythm and roots in SilkHope NC. For 5.
I sold it to a company in Guatemala who has eight or nine of them that are still in service today 4/11/23
